This page explains what a donation on Handful of Angels is, what it is not, where the money goes, and what it costs. Please read it before you give.
Handful of Angels is not a charity. Donations are personal gifts from one person to another and are generally not tax-deductible.
1. Handful of Angels Is Not a Charity
Handful of Angels, Inc. is a for-profit technology company. We build the place where a community gathers around someone with cancer, and we provide the tools for that community to give money to them. We are not a registered 501(c)(3), not a charitable organization, and not a tax-exempt entity. We do not solicit donations for ourselves.
2. Tax Treatment of Donations
A donation made through the Platform is a voluntary gift from you to the person the campaign is for. That means:
- Donations are generally not tax-deductible for federal or state income tax purposes.
- We do not issue tax receipts, Form 1099s, or other tax documents to donors.
- If you need a deductible gift, talk to your tax advisor before you give.
- If you receive campaign funds, gifts to individuals are generally not taxable income under U.S. law, but large amounts can carry reporting obligations. Talk to a tax professional. Nothing on this page is tax advice.
3. How Donations Are Processed
3.1 Payments are handled by Stripe
Every donation is processed by Stripe, Inc., a licensed payment processor, through Stripe Connect. When you give:
- You pay by debit or credit card (Apple Pay and Google Pay work where your device supports them). Your card details go directly to Stripe. They never touch our servers and we never see or store your card number.
- Stripe holds the money for the campaign until the designated Beneficiary withdraws it.
- Before anything can be withdrawn, the Beneficiary verifies their identity and connects a U.S. bank account through Stripe.
3.2 What a donation costs
We do not take a percentage of any donation. There are only two things that can come out of your gift, and you see both before you pay:
- Your donation. Any amount from $5 to $10,000. This is the gift itself, and it goes to the campaign's Beneficiary.
- Stripe's card processing fee. About 2.9% + $0.30 on the total charged to your card. Stripe keeps this; we do not. Your optional tip covers it first. If you add no tip, it comes out of your donation.
- An optional tip to Handful of Angels. We suggest 10%. You can set it to zero. If you do add a tip, it has to at least cover Stripe's fee on the charge, so your whole gift reaches the campaign. Whatever is left of your tip after that fee is how Handful of Angels pays for itself. The tip is never part of the gift to the campaign.
- Withdrawal fee. When a Beneficiary withdraws, a fee of 0.25% + $0.25 per withdrawal may apply. Withdrawals are $10 or more.
Example, with a tip: You give $100 and add a 10% tip ($10). Your card is charged $110. Stripe's fee is about $3.49, paid from the tip. The campaign receives $100.00. Handful of Angels keeps about $6.51.
Example, with no tip: You give $100. Your card is charged $100. Stripe's fee is about $3.20, deducted from the gift. The campaign receives about $96.80. Handful of Angels keeps $0.
The exact numbers for any amount are on our fees and payouts page.
3.3 When the money reaches the family
The first withdrawal from any campaign is held for 72 hours. After that, a transfer to their bank typically takes 1 to 3 business days. From your donation to the family's bank account, expect about a week.
4. Campaigns the Survivor Has Not Opened Yet
Most campaigns are built by a friend or family member before the Survivor has seen them. Until the Survivor opens the campaign:
- Nothing about their health is shown to anyone they did not tell themselves.
- Supporters see how many people gave, not how much.
- No money can be withdrawn.
When the Survivor opens it, they choose whether to keep it, keep it with donations turned off or amounts hidden, or make it quiet. If they make it quiet, the campaign pauses and every donation is refunded to the original payment method after a 24-hour window in which they can change their mind. You will be notified if your donation is refunded for this reason. Stripe's processing fee on a refunded donation is generally not recoverable by us, but the refund you receive is your full charge.
5. No Guarantee of How Funds Are Used
5.1 What we are, and are not
Handful of Angels is a technology facilitator, not a fiduciary, trustee, or guarantor. We provide the tools; we do not control the people. Specifically:
- We do not guarantee that funds will be used as a campaign describes.
- We do not monitor how a Beneficiary spends funds after withdrawal.
- We do not verify every campaign's accuracy or a Survivor's diagnosis in advance.
- We do not insure donations against loss, misuse, or fraud.
5.2 Before you give
- Read the campaign.
- Ask yourself whether you know the Angel (the person who built it) or the Survivor. Campaigns are reached only by a link the Angel shares, so you usually do.
- Give an amount you are comfortable with.
- Report anything that looks wrong (see section 11).
5.3 What we do
- We investigate every report of fraud or misuse.
- We may freeze, withhold, or reverse withdrawals when fraud is suspected.
- We may refund donors from available campaign funds when a campaign is confirmed fraudulent.
- We cooperate with law enforcement when a crime is identified.
6. Donations Are Final
Donations are intended to be final once made. Refunds are available in limited situations described in our Refund Policy, including:
- Unauthorized transactions
- Duplicate charges
- Confirmed campaign fraud
- A campaign that is cancelled, or made quiet by the Survivor, before funds are withdrawn
To request a refund, write to support@handfulofangels.com.
7. Anonymous Donations
You can give anonymously with one tap at checkout. If you do:
- Your name is not shown on the campaign.
- The Angel and the Beneficiary see that an anonymous gift arrived and its amount, not who sent it.
- We keep your identity on file for fraud prevention, legal compliance, and dispute resolution. Our administrators may access it for those purposes only.
8. Recurring Donations
We do not offer automatic recurring donations. Every donation is a one-time charge that you start yourself.
9. Campaigns for Minors
A campaign may be created for a child under 18 with cancer. In that case:
- The campaign is managed by an adult Angel (18 or older).
- The Beneficiary who receives funds must be 18 or older.
- Funds should be used for the child's benefit as the campaign describes.
- By giving, you acknowledge that you are trusting the adult Beneficiary's judgment.
10. State Fundraising Disclosure
Handful of Angels, Inc. is a for-profit technology platform that facilitates peer-to-peer giving. We are not a charity. Donations are gifts between individuals and are generally not tax-deductible. A card processing fee of approximately 2.9% + $0.30, charged by Stripe, is covered by the donor's optional tip when there is one and otherwise deducted from the donation. Donors may also leave an optional tip that is retained by Handful of Angels, Inc. after the processing fee. Where a state requires additional disclosures or registration, they will be listed here.
11. Reporting a Concern
If you believe a campaign is fraudulent or that funds are being misused, tell us:
- Email support@handfulofangels.com with the subject line "Campaign Concern — [Campaign Name]".
- Include as much detail as you can.
We take every report seriously and investigate promptly.
12. Limits on Our Liability
Our liability for donations is limited as described in our Terms of Service. In short:
- We are not liable for the actions of Angels, Beneficiaries, or other users.
- We are not liable for how funds are used after withdrawal.
- Disputes between a donor and an Angel or Beneficiary are between those parties.
